William Gambel papers, 1841-1968 (bulk 1841-1845).

Scrapbook (1 v.) includes biographical sketch of William Gambel, doctor-naturalist, written by his nephew; letters written by Gambel (who also spelled his name Gamble) to his mother from Santa Fe and from Pueblo de Los Angeles (1841) describing hardships of journey to California to California, and from Pueblo de Los Angeles (1841) describing hardships of journey to California, and from Pueblo de Los Angeles (1841) describing hardships of journey to California, and from Callao Bay and "at sea" (1844-1845) while serving with the Pacific Squadron. Included also are: letters written to Gambel by Thomas Nuttall and others; a few of Gambel's botanical notes; and miscellaneous documents; and an article, AFrontier Naturalist: William Gambel, by Jo Vaughn from the Nov. 1968 issue of The Western Tanager.
